He was born without arms but he doesn’t let that become a limitation. Despite not having arms, Zhariff continues to play an integral part in creating innovative ideas, programmes, and solutions for community development and social action, both within Malaysia and across the shores.
When the 2004 tsunami hit Acheh in Indonesia, Zhariff organised a volunteer programme to assist in the relief efforts there. Collaborating with a host of different groups including a local Indonesian NGOs known as GEMMA 9. Zhariff then spent a total of nine months there assisting and coordinating relief and rehabilitative programmes for the tsunami survivors.
Zhariff started kindergarten at the age of 2 and made his own way to school. At first, the headmaster of the school rejected him because there were no special facilities to accommodate him. However, Zhariff eventually convinced the headmaster to enrol him in the school. Zhariff has a background in developmental psychology from Griffith University, Australia and also took a bachelor’s degree, majoring in sociology, at KDU College.
Zhariff labels himself a tough person and does not limit himself from outdoor activities. At the age of 4, he tried parasailing and learned swimming from a professional coach. In 1990, Zhariff found that he was passionate about riding horses. He also finds gratification in skateboarding, football, wakeboarding, and hiking, among other sports.
